Given that the Supreme Court has struck down parts of the Federal Defense of Marriage Act and a series of rulings/pronouncements have been made by various federal agencies regarding federal employee/retiree benefits, this is a timely topic.  

About our Speaker:

Marci Flanery, CPA, PhD

Marci Flanery is a CPA specializing in the taxation of individuals, trusts, and small business entities. She has recently relocated her tax practice to the Westlake/Denny neighborhood in Seattle. Marci is a licensed CPA in Washington, Missouri, and California. Marci became a CPA in 1984 and worked for 8 years in the Kansas City and Seattle Offices of Arthur Andersen & Co. After leaving AA & Co., she taught for 8 years in the accounting program at the University of Kansas. Marci then moved to Nashville, TN and earned her PhD in Cognitive Psychology from Vanderbilt University. After graduate school, Marci completed post-doctoral work in the Neuroimaging of Memory and Cognition at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD before moving to California and returning to the practice of public accounting. Before starting her own tax practice in Seattle, Marci worked in the San Francisco office of a tax firms that specialized in the taxation of Registered Domestic Partners (RDPs). During this time, Marci was responsible for tax planning and tax return preparation for hundreds of California RDP and Same-Sex Married couples. Based this experience, Marci wrote and published “Guide to the Federal Taxation of Washington State Registered Domestic Partners” in 2011.
